Ragnarok is nearly upon us! We’re thrilled to give you an exclusive first look at gameplay. This in-game footage features our classic brutal combat and the return of the egg-shaped movement that helped make Rune so tactical. It also demonstrates one of the intense atmospheres that you’ll encounter in your quest to stop Loki.

В первой части 2000 года, и то анимация лучше была. Взмахи оружием там действительно выглядели очень мощными, чувствовалось, что такими можно и голову отрубить. А здесь как-то вяло всё…
Очень надеюсь, что это исправят. Rune 2 жду наверно года с 2003, не хотелось бы такого разочарования.

I actually like the approach. look at games like overgrowth if you want fast, I don’t find it makes the combat more enjoyable, it’s just chaos.
what I like about this, is that it’s not “fixed” on the target (like witcher, for honor and such), and that there are no combos which locks you into an animation, so combat can stay intuitive and fluid.
kingdom come’s combat is also not that enjoyable imo. 3rd person is the way to go for melee combat, especially with swords and axes, you can “feel” the surroundings way better.
if you take for example chivalry: medieval warfare, the combat is kinda basic but you have some variety with the weapons (slow but more dps or fast with less dps). the ego-perspective also makes it chaotic in brawls, its enjoyable but not that “deep”. same thing goes for mount and blade.
now take a game like jedi knight 2: jedi outcast. that was the last good game with swordplay (by far). you had 3 stances so you could go fast but less dmg/range or slow with more dmg and rang, but also vulnerable to counters.
very few combos (2 for every stance, 1 forward 1 backward-combo) BUT, and this is important, only like 3-4 sec. animation on the combos.
because of that (combos were easy to predict), most duels between skilled players were very interesting and diverse.
yea sure, this needs more polish. but if they keep that approach, stay away from long combo-animations or a console like target-lock system, if they keep movement fluent but not chaotic and maybe put in something like a fast- and a slow-stance or maybe a weapon-swap, this could go a very nice way.
the original rune was nice, with all the jumping and slicing. but if you would orientate it a little more to things like jedi outcast, so the combat has a little more depth … well 🙂 this could be multiplayer heaven.

Too much RPG elements and too little action (slowmo). I’ll pass.

Just redo original Rune with 4 changes: nerfed “backhit” range, less lag, upgraded graphics, anticheat. Perfect multiplayer game.

Why does he only do 1 swing animation? We should have options to aim how to swing the weapon such as with Kingdom Come: Deliverance.

Too slow,, it needs the old brutal and fast combat from Rune 1. Also more combos and animations please. The AI needs way more work. I know its alpha so I hope we get all this later. But thanks for the first impressions 😉 I love RUNE!

Unpopular: Is that a Japanese action-RPG hit-pause here? You know, the Dragons Dogma, Monster Hunter, Dark Souls (only with greatsword), trash Dynasty Warriors… Resident Evil 4-5-6? But why? And why on earth there is no pause in decapitation moment? It’s THE place for that japanese action pause moment (sorry, don’t know the scientific term for that fake hit “impact”)

I don’t mind some weapons being slow or you can slow the attacks by introducing stamina which will prevent button mashing and this time around it will add some strategic gameplay!

i love the graphics! Love how the bearskin sways on the shoulders of our hero. I think you nailed it with this one, guys! But combat needs an improvement due to the modern times and i believe thay you know it and working on it as this is only the alpha. Couple ideas from me – combat should look more spectacular and attacks should look like hero launch them with the corpus of his body to make it more natural. Anyway, you guys doing a great job and i’m loving what i see!

I just came back from a LAN-party (Yes, those still exist!) and we played Rune with like 8 people…
Stll fun as hell killing someone with his own arm! ^^

Oh yeah:
MAKE THE COMBAT FASTER!
It is funny, that the 1.25 Speed, provided by Youtube, is pretty much the thing i want!
